While it's hard to believe another year has come and gone, that just means it's time to start making those New Year's travel plans.

While many people think of New York City as the premier place to celebrate on New Year's Eve, we have many to choose from. But here are five top destinations in the U.S. to add to your list and book cheap flights for a New Year’s vacation.

New Orleans, Louisiana: If for no other reason, you won't be freezing like you will in most U.S. cities on New Year's Eve. New Orleans is one of the most pleasant metros in America during the winter, making it comfortable to take part in outdoor celebrations. Not to mention, the Crescent City knows how to throw a party. One of the best parts about New Orleans is that you're allowed to walk the streets with your favorite adult beverage as long as it's in a plastic container. Find a seat along the river and enjoy the fireworks show at midnight.

Atlanta, Georgia: Atlanta sometimes gets overlooked as a go-to destination this time of year, but if you want a city that will have a vibrant nightlife and feel comfortable, than Atlanta is hard to beat. There are parties and concerts happening throughout the city, such as in Buckhead, which is one of Atlanta prime spots. However, make sure you get to downtown Atlanta in time for the midnight peach drop, which is the south's version of New York City's ball drop.

Boston, Massachusetts: When heading to Boston for New Years, make sure you bundle up. Boston has long been one of the top New Year's destinations, although locals know it as First Night. The annual festival starts mid-morning and continues into the wee hours of New Years. The festival includes live music and various exhibits and performances, such as ice sculpting. The festival ends with a bang with fireworks over the Boston Harbor at midnight.

Las Vegas, Nevada: While New York City has been considered the premier place to celebrate New Year's Eve, Las Vegas isn't far behind. Vegas is one big party as it is, but things really light up on New Year's Eve. No matter what your interests are in nightlife, you'll find something to fit in Vegas. While there are parties happening at clubs and hotels around the city, there are also more low-key entertainment options, such as shows by performers such as David Copperfield and the Blue Man Group.

Miami, Florida: For a break from the cold and a much warmer destination, it doesn't get much warmer than Miami. On a sunny day, you may find yourself spending an afternoon lying on the beach during the December holidays. There are tons of events happening at bars and restaurants around the city, but if you prefer enjoying something more low-key and outdoors, then head to Miami Beach by midnight for the fireworks celebration.
